Featuring the Beloved Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
The coin's obverse bears the Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman. The design became famous during its time on America's half dollars, on which it was struck from 1916-1947. Liberty strides confidently to the left side of the coin draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap on her head. The cap is traditionally worn by freed slaves. She carries laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, in her left hand while extending her right hand in front of her above the morning sun. Her name, "LIBERTY,"arches over the image, while the national motto,"IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020,"are also included on this face.
John Mercanti, who would go on to become the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, designed the reverse for this series. He modeled it after the Great Seal of the United States. Thirteen stars, which represent the original states, are arranged in a triangular formation above the head of an eagle, which protects a union shield. The eagle spreads its wings while holding a ribbon that bears the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. It also clutches arrows, symbols of military readiness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in its talons. This design is encircled by three inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR."
