Why purchase this 2020 1 oz Gold $50 American Eagle?
Since the series began in 1986, American Gold Eagles have been struck in four sizes. This 1 oz version is the largest among them and therefore the most prized among collectors. Each coin in the series is backed by the US government for weight and purity and bears one of the most beautiful designs in the long history of numismatics. This piece was struck at the West Point Mint from .9167 fine gold.
Featuring the Famous Double Eagle Design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The coin's obverse design was revived for this series after featuring on the double eagle from 1907-1933. The creation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the image features Liberty standing at the center striking a confident pose as she faces the holder. She elevates on foot upon a rock as her long hair blows in the breeze. She holds her torch, which is considered a beacon of freedom by billions throughout the world, in front of her and an olive branch, which expresses her desire for peace, off to the side. The rays of the morning sun spread out behind her, combining with the small rendering of the Capitol Dome on the left to make the allegorical figure appear larger than life. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed above her head, and the coin's date, "2020," is included on the right. All of this is encircled by fifty stars, which represent the states. Four stars were added to the original stars to account for the most recent states to join the union.
The reverse design celebrates the national bird. Created by Miley Busiek, it consists of two parts. The top part is a male eagle, which carries an olive branch back to his nest. The bottom part is his mate tending to their young in that nest as she watches his return. These two parts are separated by a pair of statutory inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Other inscriptions on this face provide the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE GOLD," and face value, "50 DOLLARS."
