Why purchase this 1 oz Silver 2020 $1 American Eagle?
In 1986, the US Mint changed the precious metals world with the issuance of the first ever Silver Eagle. Now in its 35th year, the series continues to be in high demand among collectors around the world thanks to its stunning designs and US government backing for weight and purity. In recent years, Silver Eagles have been struck at multiple mints, a change that offers variety to collectors of a stable series. This coin was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
Breathtaking Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
The Silver Eagle Series takes its obverse design from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, which was issued from 1916-1947. Liberty is draped in the American flag and wears a Phrygian cap, which traditionally indicates that someone is a freed slave. She carries laurel and oak branches in her left hand. They represent civilian and military honors, respectively. She extends her right hand in front of her to the left side of the coin above the morning sun, as if greeting the new day. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image. Other obverse inscriptions include the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020."
At the center of the reverse is a union shield. It is guarded by an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows symbolize America's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a desire for peace. In the bird's beak is a ribbon that bears the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Thirteen stars above the eagle's head represent the original states. The design is an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States by modern numismatic legend John Mercanti. Three inscriptions spread throughout the rim reading, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR."
