Why add this 2020 1 oz Silver $1 American Eagle to your collection?
Now three and a half decades into the series, the American Silver Eagle continues to dominate the bullion market. Collectors flock to the coin year after year both because of its beautiful designs and because it enjoys US government backing for weight and purity. The coin combines the work of a historic giant of American numismatics and a modern one. In recent years, the coin has been struck at multiple mints. This one was struck a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Patriotic Walking Liberty Design
The coin's obverse design comes from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, which was issued from 1916-1947. Draped in the American flag and wearing a traditional indicator of a freed slave, a Phrygian cap, Liberty strides confidently toward the left. She carries branches of laurel, which represent honors bestowed upon civilians, and oak, which symbolize honors bestowed upon members of the military, in her left hand. Her right hand she extends in front of her above the rising sun, as if presenting the new day to the holder. Her name, "LIBERTY," spreads throughout the top half of the rim, while additional obverse inscriptions include the date, "2020," and national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The reverse was designed by John Mercanti. Adaapted from the Great Seal of the United States, it consists of an eagle guarding a union shield under an arrangement of thirteen stars. The stars represent the country's original states. The eagle holds a ribbon with the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak while clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows serve as a reminder to all that America is prepared to defend her values, while the nation's desire for peace is expressed with the olive branch. The coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
