Why buy this 2020 1 oz Silver $1 American Eagle?
Year after year, collectors flock to the American Silver Eagle, the world's leading annual bullion coin. The series dates back to 1986. It brings together a classic design from America's numismatic history with the work of living legend John Mercanti. The series also enjoys the US government's backing for weight and purity. In recent years, the US Mint has begun striking the coins at multiple mints. This piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Patriotic Walking Liberty Design
The obverse bears the Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman, which first appeared on the half dollar. Liberty strides to the left side of the coin while bearing laurel and oak branches in her left hand. The branches represent civilian and military honors, respectively. Liberty has a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave, on her head and is draped in the American flag. She extends her right hand in front of her above the morning, as if presenting the new day to the holder. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020," are also inscribed on this face.
On the reverse is John Mercanti's adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle protects a union shield under a triangular arrangement of thirteen stars, which represent the original states. The bird holds a ribbon with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak and arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows remind all that America is always prepared to defend her values, while the olive branch expresses the country's desire for peace. Rim inscriptions include the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
Flawless MS70 ER with Silver Core Holder and Mercanti Signed Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this coin in a silver core holder and provided its grading information on a label that was hand signed by John Mercanti. That information includes a Mint State 70 grade and Early Releases certification. To receive an MS70 grade, a coin must appear perfect under 5x magnification. ER certification indicates that a coin was submitted for grading within 30 days of its initial release from the mint.
