Why purchase this 2020 $1 American 1 oz Silver Eagle?
The American Silver Eagle continues its reign as the world's leading bullion coin in 2020. Since 1986, the series has combined designs by a pair of American numismatic legends with the stability that comes with US government backing for purity and weight. Each coin in the series is struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver. 2020 marks the last year on which the original reverse design will appear on the bullion version of the coin, though it will remain on proofs.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Classic Walking Liberty Design
Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty design returned for the Silver Eagle series in 1986 after appearing on the half dollar from 1916-1947. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, and is draped in the American flag. She strides confidently toward the left side of this face carrying branches of laurel and oak in her left arm. The laurel branches represent honors bestowed upon civilians, while the oak branches represent military honors. To the left, the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. Obverse inscriptions include the name "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020."
John Mercanti's reverse design was modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle spreads its wings while protecting a union shield. In its beak, it holds a ribbon that bears the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM." It also clutches arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace, in its talons. Thirteen stars, which represent the original states, are arranged in a triangular formation above the bird's head. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" spreads throughout the top half of the rim, while inscriptions on the bottom half of the rim note the coin's weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
