Why purchase this $1 American 2020 1 oz Silver Eagle?
The American Silver Eagle has been a favorite of coin collectors around the world since it was first issued in 1986. Now in its 35th year, the coin is struck at multiple mints, a change that gives collectors variety in a series that long lacked it. Every Silver Eagle is struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Historic Walking Liberty Design
The obverse design comes from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was designed by Adolph Weinman and issued from 1916-1947. Liberty appears as the image of patriotism with a Phrygian cap on her head and an American flag draped over her. Phrygian caps were historically worn by freed slaves. Liberty bears laurel and oak branches as she strides toward the left side of the coin. The branches represent civilian and military honors, respectively. The allegorical figure extends her right hand forward above the morning sun, which is just starting to rise. Obverse inscriptions read, "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2020."
On the reverse is an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. An eagle protects a union shield while holding a ribbon in its beak and arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows serve as a reminder of America's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. On the ribbon is the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). Thirteen stars above the bird's head represent the original states. Three rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," combine to encircle the image.
