Why order this 2020 $25 American 1/2 oz Gold Eagle?
The American Gold Eagle enters its 35th year of issue as one of the world's favorite gold bullion coins. Issued annually since 1986, the series provides the security of the American government's backing for weight and purity and offers collectors the chance to own a modern piece with one of numismatic history's most beautiful designs. The Gold Eagle is struck in four sizes, of which this half ounce piece is the second largest. The coin was struck at the West Point Mint from .9167 fine gold.
Exquisite Saint-Gaudens Design
Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the obverse design, which takes its name from him. It originally appeared on the double eagle from 1907-1933 and made a return for the Gold Eagle's debut in 1986. Liberty stands against a backdrop of the rays of the morning sun, which spread out behind her. She strikes a confident pose with one foot set upon a rock and her long hair blowing in a strong wind. She holds her torch of freedom in front of her and a symbol of peace, an olive branch, off to her side. Next to her is the Capitol Dome, which is rendered in miniature on the left. Four stars have been added to the original design's 46 along the rim to account for the four states that have since joined the union. "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, while the date, "2020," is included on the right.
On the reverse is an eagle family design that Miley Busiek created specifically for this series. A mother eagle tends to her young as she watches her mate return with an olive branch. Both statutory inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are included between the top and bottom portions of the design. The coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD," and face value, "25 DOLLARS," are inscribed along the rim.
