Why buy this 2020 $25 American 1/2 oz Gold Eagle?
Since 1986, the American Gold Eagle has enamored both new and experienced collectors. It features one of the most admired designs in the history of numismatics. Thanks both to that and its US government backing for weight and purity, the coin is a favorite among collectors every year. This half ounce piece, which is the second largest of the four sizes in which the coin is issued, was struck from 1/4 oz of .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint. It will arrive in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Classic Liberty Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse bears the most highly acclaimed design in American numismatic history. Named for the man who created it, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the design comes from the double eagle, on which it appeared from 1907-1933. Liberty stands facing the holder with one foot set upon a rock and her long hair blowing in the breeze. She holds in her hands two powerful symbols, her torch, which represents freedom, and an olive branch, which represents peace. She appears larger than life thanks to the backdrop, in which the rays of the sun spread out behind her. The Capitol Dome is included in miniature on the left, while fifty stars along the rim encircle the entire image. This is four more than the original design included and accounts for states that have since joined the union. "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, and the date, "2020," is included on the right.
Miley Busiek's reverse design consists of a family of eagles. The top portion is a male bringing an olive branch back to his nest. Below, his mate watches his return while tending to their young. Two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are set between the two parts of the image on the left and right, respectively, while rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD," and "25 DOLLARS."
