Why purchase this 2020 1/10 oz Gold $5 American Eagle?
Since 1986, the US Mint has struck Gold Eagles for collectors around the world. The series combines the latest minting practices with a classic design from America's rich numismatic history. It also enjoys the backing of the US government for weight and purity. This 1/10 oz. piece is the smallest and most affordable of the four sizes in which the coin is struck. It comes to us from the West Point Mint, where it was struck from .9167 fine gold.
Exquisite Liberty Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse design comes from the double eagle of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was issued from 1907-1933. Liberty stands at the center with her left foot elevated upon a rock and her long hair blowing in a strong wind. She holds her torch, which represents freedom, in her right hand and an olive branch, which stands for peace, in her left. The rays of the morning sun, which spread out from behind her, combine with the miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome on the left to make her appear larger than life. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image, while the date, "2020," is noted on the right. All of this is encircled by fifty stars, which represent the states along the rim. Four stars have been added to the original design to account for the country's newest states.
The reverse design, which was created by Miley Busiek, consists of a male eagle carrying an olive branch back to his family, which awaits his arrival in their nest below. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," two statutory mottoes, are inscribed between the top and bottom parts of the design. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" spreads throughout much of the top half of the rim, while inscriptions on the bottom half read, "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD" and "5 DOLLARS."
