Why purchase this $5 2020 American 1/10 oz Gold Eagle?
Now in its 35th year, the American Gold Eagle Series continues to bring collectors one of the most beautiful designs in numismatic history. The series began in 1986 following the adoption of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. It quickly emerged as a collector favorite thanks both to its beauty and its backing by the US government for weight and purity. Coins in the series are struck in four sizes, the most affordable of which is this 1/10 oz. piece. The coin was struck on a .9167 fine gold planchet at the West Point Mint.
Featuring Augustus Saint-Gaudens's Iconic Liberty Design
Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the obverse design, which first appeared on the double eagle. Named for him, the image features Liberty standing in the center facing the holder. She strikes a confident pose with one foot set upon a rock as her long hair blows in a strong breeze. In her right hand, she holds high her torch, a beacon of freedom for the oppressed throughout the world. In her left hand, she extends an olive branch, which represents a desire for peace. The rays of the morning sun spread out from behind her and combine with the Capitol Dome, which is on the left, to make her appear larger than life. Fifty stars, which represent the current states, encircle the image along the rim. Four stars were added to the original design to account for the newest states. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," at the top, and "2020," which is on the right.
Miley Busiek created the eagle family design that appears on the reverse. A male eagle carries an olive branch in his talons as he prepares to land in his nest. His mate watches his return while tending to their children below. The two parts of this design are separated by a pair of inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Additional inscriptions on the rim offer essential information about the coin, including its country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD," and its face value, "5 DOLLARS."
