Why purchase this $5 American 2020 1/10 oz Gold Eagle?
The American Gold Eagle Series dates back to 1986, when it was first struck following the adoption of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Since then, the coin has staked its claim to a place in the hearts of collectors around the world. The popularity of the series stems from its US government backing for weight and purity and the fact that it features one of the most beloved designs in numismatic history. This coin was struck on a 1/10th oz planchet of .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint.
Exquisite Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse design takes its name from its creator, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The design originally appeared on the double eagle from 1907-1933. At the center is Liberty, who stands facing the holder with her long hair blowing in the breeze. She stands with one foot elevated upon a rock. In her right hand, she holds her torch, which is recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom. In her left hand, she holds an olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, off to her side. In the background, the rays of the rising sun spread out behind her. The Capitol Dome is included in miniature on the left. Fifty stars, four more than appeared on the original double eagle design, represent the states along the rim. "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, while the date, "2020," is set off to the right.
A male eagle returns to his nest carrying an olive branch in Miley Busiek's reverse design. His mate watches his return while tending to their nestlings below. Statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed to the left and right, respectively. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches over the image, while inscriptions on the bottom half of the rim read, "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD" and "5 DOLLARS."
