Why add this 2020 1/10 oz Gold $5 American Eagle to your collection?
The American Gold Eagle is the country's oldest ongoing bullion series. It started in 1986 following the enactment of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Backed by the US government for weight and purity, the coin is issued in four sizes. It brings one of numismatic history's most beautiful designs to collectors new and experienced every year. Struck from 1/10 oz of .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint, this piece is the smallest of the four sizes in which the series is struck.
Featuring the Historic Saint-Gaudens Design
The coin's obverse bears the highly acclaimed Saint-Gaudens design. Named for its creator, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the image was revived for the Gold Eagle Series after appearing on the double eagle from 1907-1933. Liberty stands at the center facing the holder with one foot on a rock as a strong wind blows her long hair. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom, in front of her and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, off to her side against a backdrop of the rays of the rising sun, which spread out from behind her. She is joined by a miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome, which is on the left, and fifty stars that represent the states along the rim. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over her, while the coin's date, "2020," is on the right.
Three rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD," and "5 DOLLARS," partially frame the reverse design along the rim. That design, which was created by Miley Busiek, consists of two parts. The top portion is a male eagle bringing an olive branch back to his nest. Below, his mate watches him return while tending to their young. The two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are between the two parts of the design on the left and right.
