Patriotic Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
Obverse: The obverse features Adolph Weinman's famous Walking Liberty design. The image first appeared on the half dollar in 1916 and remained there through 1947. Draped in the American flag, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap that identifies her as a freed slave. In her left arm, she bears branches, laurel to represent civilian honors and oak to represent military honors. She extends her right hand forward above the rising sun as though presenting the holder with the new day. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image, while the date, "2020," and national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," are also included on this face. Born in Durmersheim in modern day Germany, Adolph Weinman became one of the most prolific and best known numismatic designers in American history. Besides the Walking Liberty half dollar, he is also famous for designing the Mercury dime. His sculptural work also appears on the pediment of the Jefferson Memorial.
Reverse: John Mercanti designed an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States for the reverse. An eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The arrows serve as reminders to all of America's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. Above the eagle's head are thirteen stars, which are arranged in a triangular formation. They represent the original states. Inscriptions encircling the image read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." Fitting for someone who has made such major contributions to American numismatics, John Mercanti was born in Philadelphia. To date, he has created more designs for coins and medals than any other US Mint employee. From 2006-2010, he served as the eleventh Chief Engraver of the mint.
