Silver Coins featuring a proof finish are among the highest quality issues in the numismatic world. The coins are struck using specialized handing and preparation. This issue features the sought after reverse proof finish with frosty fields and highly reflective design devices. The “enhanced” reverse proof further differentiates itself via multiple polished and frosted finishes” applied at different areas to highlight elements of the design or to increase eye appeal.
This is just the second American Silver Eagle to be released with such a finish and the first to be struck at the San Francisco Mint. Earlier this year the first Enhanced Reverse Proof addition to the series debuted in the historic Pride of Two Nations Set and was struck at the West Point Mint.
The 1 oz. .999 pure American Silver Eagle is a timeless beauty first introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1986. It is stuck in both a bullion finish as well as in collectible, limited and lower mintage versions with alternate finishes.
Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design was adapted from the circulating U.S. half dollar from 1917-1947. Liberty is shown draped in the U.S. Flag as she bears Oak and Laurel branches symbolizing strength and prosperity. 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti a legend in Numismatic design created an original reverse. A heraldic Bald Eagle is shown protected by a shield, his wings “displayed.” He carries arrows and an olive branch in his claws. In his beak holds he carries a banner reading “E Pluribus Unum.” An inverted triangle of thirteen stars represents the original colonies from which the United States of America grew.
“S” mint marked proof Silver Eagles are not struck with any regular schedule. They have proven popular with collectors through the years.
