Why buy this 2019-W Proof Silver American Eagle?
The Proof Silver Eagle has become a favorite of American coin collectors since the inception of the series in 1986. The coin features a classic American design executed to the high standards of today's U.S Mint, and is complete with a stunning proof finish that accentuates every element of the image. This proof was struck on a one ounce planchet of .999 fine silver at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a "W" mint mark on the reverse.
Treasured Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
When the mint started issuing Silver Eagle coins in 1986, it revived the Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman, which had appeared on the half dollar from 1916-1947. An icon of American numismatics, it features Liberty draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap as she strides toward the left side of the coin. There, the sun emerges from beyond the horizon to begin a new day. Liberty carries in her left arm laurel and oak branches, which are symbolic of civilian honors and military ones, respectively.
The Great Seal of the United States served as the model for John Mercanti's reverse design. At the center is a union shield, which is guarded by an eagle. In its mouth, the bird holds a ribbon that bears the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one), and in its talons, it holds symbols of war, arrows, and peace, an olive branch. The original states are represented by thirteen stars, which are arranged above the bird's head. Rim inscriptions that offer the coin's country, weight, and face value encircle the images.
