Striking Mill Girl Design by Joel Iskowitz
John Flanagan's portrait of America's first President, George Washington, features on the obverse. Washington bears a stern countenance in the effigy, which has featured on America's quarters since 1932. Inscriptions on the rim read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR," while "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" flank the image.
Joel Iskowitz designed and Phebe Hemphill sculpted the reverse design. A mill girl works on a power loom by a window. The Boott Mill clock tower is visible in the background. The mill girls were famous not just for their work in the factories but also for advocating for better working conditions, opposing slavery, and recognizing the importance of education. The design is encircled by a rim frame in which there are four inscriptions. The two unique to this piece are "LOWELL" and "MASSACHUSETTS."
