Why add this America the Beautiful 2019-W Lowell National Park Quarter to your collection?
The America the Beautiful Quarters Series continues with this Lowell edition. The coin is perfect for collectors with an interest in American history, abolitionism, and workers' rights. The mill girls honored by the design were involved in the latter two, while their work itself was important during the Industrial Revolution. This coin is of particular interest since it was one of two million of its kind released directly into circulation. These two million are distinct from other Lowell quarters because of the inclusion of the West Point Mint's "W" mint mark, which did not appear on circulated quarters until this year.
Historic Mill Girl Design by Joel Iskowitz
Since 1932, John Flanagan's portrait of President George Washington has featured on the obverse of American quarters. The left-side effigy is joined by several inscriptions, including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR" above and below it, respectively, and "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" to its left and right.
The reverse design features one of the mill girls working on a power loom. She is working by a window, through which Boott Cotton Mill clocktower and smokestack are visible. The design was created by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. Rim inscriptions include "LOWELL" and "MASSACHUSETTS."
