Why purchase this 2019-W$5 Gold Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Proof?
The US Mint is celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of mankind's greatest accomplishments with seven coins that mark the occasion. These coins mark just the second time that the US Mint has released a domed coin. This coin is part of the lowest mintage of all at just 50,000 pieces across all gold options. It is perfect for collectors looking for inspiration, as well as those who are patriotic, as the moon landing was a marquis victory for the United States during the Cold War. The coin was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a "W" mint mark on the obverse.
Powerful Helmet Reflection Design
Gary Cooper's footprint design won out against stiff competition to appear on the obverse. On the top half of the rim are the words "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, along with four depictions of the moon in various stages. Under them is a single footprint on the moon, which represents one of the greatest accomplishments in human history. Also appearing on this face are several inscriptions. "2019" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are among them.
The reverse is convex to reproduce the curvature of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. That helmet serves as the design. The largest part, the visor, shows a reflection of Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. The coin's face value, "FIVE DOLLARS," is inscribed at the top of the visor. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed on other portions of the helmet above and below the visor, respectively. The design comes from a famous photograph taken on the moon.

The successful Apollo 11 Mission and the landing of the first men on the Moon was a distinctly American triumph. Although the bulk of the credit rightfully goes to the nation behind the mission, other countries also made extremely valuable – and often overlooked – contributions to it.
Over the years, the West Point Mint has admirably served the Numismatic community by producing a number of iconic, noteworthy, and highly sought-after releases.
