Why buy this $5 Gold 2019-W Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Proof?
In 2019, the US Mint is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of man's first walk on the moon. The feat was not only a major accomplishment for mankind but also a major victory for the United States during the Cold War space race. This is the lowest mintage of the seven coins being offered by the US Mint at just 50,000 pieces across the gold options that are being released. It is perfect for collectors looking for inspiration as they strive toward a big goal, as well as patriotic Americans who want to celebrate one of the country's greatest feats. The coin was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a "W" mint mark. This issue marks just the second time that the US Mint has released a domed coin.
Moving Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
The obverse design by Gary Cooper emerged victorious in a large competition for the obverse. The focal point of the design is a footprint on the surface of the moon. Arching over it, the moon in different phases is interspersed among the names of the NASA programs that led up to and included the moon walk, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is among the other inscriptions on this face.
The reverse is convex to replicate Buzz Aldrin's helmet. The bulk of this face is taken up by a reflection in his visor. In the reflection, Neil Armstrong stands between the American flag and the lunar module. The coin's face value, "FIVE DOLLARS," is inscribed at the top of the visor. Inscriptions on other parts of the helmet read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
