Why buy this $5 Gold 2019-W Commemorative Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Proof?
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of one of America's biggest Space Race victories over the Soviet Union, man's first visit to the moon. The landing took place on the Apollo 11 mission, the key anniversary of which the US Mint now marks with its second ever domed coins. This $5 Gold Proof has the largest face value among them along with its uncirculated counterpart. Together, the coins have a maximum mintage of just 50,000 pieces. This coin bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint, where it was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold.
Stirring Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
The U.S Mint held a contest for the obverse design, and a submission by Gary Cooper won. Calling to mind the famous words of Neil Armstrong, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," it centers on a single footprint on the surface of the moon. Of course, the landing was the culmination of hard work not just of those on that mission but of those working on the three programs that made it possible. Accordingly, Cooper honored those programs by including their names, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the top half of the rim.
A portion of a photograph taken on the moon served as the model for Phebe Hemphihll's reverse design. This is the convex face, as it reflect the curvature of the piece of equipment that dominates it, the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. Within that visor is a clear reflection of Neil Armstrong alongside the American flag and the lunar module. Inscriptions on this face include, "FIVE DOLLARS," which is within the visor, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," which is above it, and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one), which is below it.
