Why order this Commemorative Proof 2019-W $5 Gold Apollo 11 50th Anniversary?
On July 20, 1969, the world watched in awe as Neil Armstrong took man's first steps on the moon. For Americans, the moment filled them with patriotism, as it was a powerful yet peaceful victory in its ongoing conflict with the Soviet Union. For all men, it inspired confidence in the awesome extent of human potential. Now, the U.S Mint is celebrating the half century mark of the occasion with seven new coins, among them this $5 Gold Commemorative. The coins are domed, just the second such issues from the mint. Together with the uncirculated version, this coin is part of a maximum mintage of 50,000 pieces. Each one was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold at the West Point Mint and bears that mint's "W" mint mark on the obverse.
Soul Stirring Moon Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Gary Cooper beautifully captures the sheer awe yet simplicity of the moment in his obverse design, which consists of a single footprint on the moon's surface. Mundane though the step itself was, Cooper recognized the countless men and women who made it possible by including the names of the NASA missions that led up to it, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the rim. Among them are images of the moon in four phases.
The convex reverse imitates the curvature of the visor on Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which takes up most of the space on this face. The visor reflects the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module. Phebe Hemphill modeled the design, which she also sculpted, after a portion of a photograph taken during the lunar visit.
Exquisite PF69 ER with Black Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Proof 69, which means that it is perfect as seen by the naked eye. NGC further certified it Early Releases, a designation that is given to coins that the company received within a month of their initial release from the mint. The grading company set the coin in a black core, which many collector prefer to the more traditional white.
