Why purchase this 2019-W $5 Gold Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative?
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind when he set foot on the lunar surface. The marquis event in space exploration was a major American victory in the Space Race with the Soviet Union. The U.S Mint is celebrating the 50th anniversary of that first visit to the moon with seven domed coins, just the second such coins issued by the mint. This $5 gold piece has, along with its proof counterpart, the highest face value among them. It was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold and is part of a mintage of 50,000 pieces. The coin bears the West Point Mint's "W" mint mark under the date on the obverse.
Powerful Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Designed by Gary Cooper and sculpted by Joseph Menna, the obverse design consists of the names of the three NASA programs that made the moon landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along with the moon in four phases arching over a single lunar footprint. The image calls to mind Neil Armstrong's famous statement when he first set foot on the moon. Also included on this face are the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," and the date, "2019."
Phebe Hemphill's reverse design fits perfectly with the convex shape of the coin. The curvature mimics the curvature of the helmet of Buzz Aldrin's spacesuit, which takes up nearly the entire face of the coin. In his visor are clear reflections, from left to right, of the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module. Inscriptions on this face include "FIVE DOLLARS," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
