Why buy this Apollo 11 2019-W 50th Anniversary $5 Gold Commemorative?
The U.S Mint marks fifty years since America's greatest victory in the Space Race, man's first walk on the moon, with seven commemorative coins. This $5 gold piece has the highest fave value among them, along with its proof counterpart. The coin is perfect not only for patriotic Americans, but for anyone with an interest in exploration. It can also provide inspiration for those who have their sights set on a big goal. This coin was struck at the West Point Mint from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold and bears a "W" mint mark on the obverse. Along with its proof counterpart, it is part of a combined mintage of just 50,000 pieces.
Powerful Neil Armstrong Design by Phebe Hemphill
Gary Cooper designed and Joseph Menna sculpted the obverse, where a single footprint captures what Neil Armstrong meant when he said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Arching over the footprint are inscriptions that pay homage to the three NASA programs that made the moon landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along with images of the moon in different stages. The date, "2019," and national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," are among several other obverse inscriptions.
The reverse, the convex side of the coin, captures the curvature of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which dominates this face. Designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, this image comes from a famous photograph taken during the lunar visit. The reflection in Buzz Aldrin's visor shows Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. Inscriptions on this face include "FIVE DOLLARS," which is in the visor, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
Flawless MS70 FDI with Black Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this coin in a sleek black core holder, which provides a stunning contrast with the coin itself. NGC also gave the coin its highest grade, Mint State 70, thus indicating that it is in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification. The coin was also certified First Day of Issue, which means that it was submitted through an exclusive process.
