Why purchase this Apollo 11 2019-W 50th Anniversary $5 Gold Commemorative?
Share in the US Mint's celebration of the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest accomplishments in human history with this 2019-W $5 Gold Commemorative. The Apollo 11 mission achieved what had been thought impossible for most of human history by landing man on the moon. In doing so, it also won a massive psychological victory in the Cold War. One of seven coins issued to mark the occasion, this piece is part of a combined mintage of just 50,000 pieces. It was struck from 8.359 grams of .900 fine gold at the West Point Mint and bears that mint's "W" mint mark. The Apollo 11 commemoratives are just the second set of domed coins ever struck by the US Mint.
Patriotic American Flag Design by Phebe Hemphill
Gary Cooper designed, and Joseph Menna sculpted, the obverse design, which features a single footprint on the lunar surface. The design beautifully captures the sentiment of Neil Armstrong when he said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Arching over the footprint are images of the moon in four stages along with the names of the three NASA programs that led up to the landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Other inscriptions on this face include the date, "2019," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The domed reverse echoes the design of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. It is dominated by his visor, in which there is a clear reflection of Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. The coin's face value, "FIVE DOLLARS," is inscribed within the visor, while inscriptions on other parts of the helmet read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
