Why order this 50th Anniversary 2019-W $5 Gold Apollo 11 Commemorative?
Collectors with an interest in space exploration, patriotic Americans, and those looking for inspiration alike are sure to love this $5 Gold 2019-W 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 Commemorative Proof. The coin is one of seven issued by the U.S Mint to commemorate the Apollo 11 mission that landed a man on the moon for the first time. The event marked not only a major achievement in space exploration, but also a major American victory in the Space Race. This coin was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a "W' mint mark. These commemorative coins mark just the second time that the US Mint has issued domed coins.
Powerful Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Gary Cooper's artwork won a design competition for the artwork. Engraved by Joseph Menna, the design depicts a single footprint on the lunar surface, calling to mind Neil Armstrong's famous quote, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Images of the moon in four phases are interspersed among the names of the NASA missions that made the moon landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the rim at the top. Other inscriptions on this face include but are not limited to the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2019."
Phebe Hemphill's reverse design is on the convex face, which echoes the shape of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. The design was taken from part of a famous photograph on the lunar surface. Aldrin's helmet shows a reflection of Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module on the surface of the moon. Reverse inscriptions include, "FIVE DOLLARS," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
