Why order this $5 Gold 2019-W Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative?
The Apollo 11 mission that landed man on the moon for the first time in 1969 was at once the greatest achievement in the long history of exploration, and a key American victory in the Cold War's Space Race. Now, the U.S Mint is releasing seven coins to mark the 50th anniversary of the occasion. The coins are just the second ever domed issues from the mint. This gold coin has the level highest face value among them. Along with its Proof counterpart, it is part of a maximum mintage of only 50,000 pieces. The coin was struck from 8.359 g of .900 fine gold at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a "W" mint mark.
Awe Inspiring Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Gary Cooper's design, which was sculpted by Joseph Menna, captures at once the beauty and magnitude of landing a man on the moon, with a single footprint. Careful to pay homage to the NASA programs that made the landing possible, Cooper included their names, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the rim at the top. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," and the date, "2019," also appear on this face.
On the reverse is a Phebe Hemphill design, which she modeled off of a famous photograph that was taken during the moon landing. It features a reflection in the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. The reflection consists of Neil Armstrong, the lunar module, and the American flag, and the curvature of the coin replicates the curvature of the helmet. "FIVE DOLLARS," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed on different parts of the helmet.
Flawless MS70 ER with Black Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this coin in a black core holder and awarded it their highest grade, Mint State 70. To receive that grade, a coin must be perfect as seen under 5x magnification. The grading company also certified the coin Early Releases, thus indicating that they received it within 30 days of its initial mint release.
