Clever Designs Enhanced by the Coin's Curved Shape
The obverse features a design created by Gary Cooper and Joseph Menna, depicting an astronaut's boot print on the lunar surface, with symbols representing the phases of the moon and the inscriptions "MERCURY," "GEMINI" and "APOLLO" curving above. Additional inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "2019," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "W."
The lunar lander, American flag and image of Neil Armstrong are reflected in the helmet of astronaut Buzz Aldrin on the domed reverse designed by Phebe Hemphill. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "FIVE DOLLARS" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
