Why buy this $5 Gold 2019-W American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Proof?
World War I was one of the bloodiest conflicts that the world has ever seen. However, in its wake, one of America's finest organizations, the American Legion, was created. The Legion first met in Paris on March 15-17, 1919 and today promotes patriotism and honor through its various programs, which serve youth, active military members, and veterans. The U.S Mint is joining in the celebration of the organization's 100th anniversary with three coins, including this $5 Gold Commemorative. The coin was struck on an 8.359 g planchet of .900 fine gold. Part of a combined mintage of 50,000 pieces, which also includes business strikes, this piece bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint on the obverse.
Patriotic Eagle Design by Paul C. Balan
Chris Costello's obverse design, which was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, features a "V", a symbol of victory, superimposed on the Eiffel Tower. The Paris landmark represents the city in which the new organization held its first meeting. Flanking these design elements are the anniversary years, "1919" and "2019." Other inscriptions on this face read, "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY."
Designed by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Joseph Menna, the reverses consists of the American Legion logo on the left and an eagle in flight on the right. The coin's face value, "$5," is inscribed above the eagle's head, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are also included on this face.

When it comes to modern U.S. coins, rarity as defined solely by a coin’s mintage usually matters less than the rarity of a particular coin relative to the other coins in its series.
Here are arguably the five top examples of modern U.S coins that are likely to remain in demand indefinitely and in most cases may remain the key date coins within their respective series.
Over the years, the West Point Mint has admirably served the Numismatic community by producing a number of iconic, noteworthy, and highly sought-after releases.
The U.S. Mint will release a clad half dollar, a silver dollar and a $5 gold coin to honor the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the American Legion. Proceeds from the series will help support the ongoing efforts of one of the most celebrated American Institutions ever created.
