Why purchase this 2019-W America the Beautiful 25C Clad San Antonio Missions Historical Park Quarter?
The U.S Mint strikes quarters for circulation at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. In 2019, it participated in National Coin Week by releasing the first ever quarters struck for circulation to bear the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint. All of these coins were released directly into circulation, giving collectors and non-collectors alike something to look for every time they dealt with change. Part of those releases, this San Antonio Missions Historical Park Quarter honors the missions that started what is today the city of San Antonio. Only two million of this design will be released into circulation.
Featuring the Missions Design of Chris Costello
American's first President, George Washington, features at the center of the obverse. The portrait, which was created by John Flanagan, has been a fixture of American quarters since it first appeared on them in 1932. The effigy is joined by four inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR" on the rim and "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" to the left and right, respectively.
Chris Costello's reverse design pays tribute to the San Antonio Missions. The first thing one notices is that it is divided into quadrants. Costello did this as a reference to the famous Colonial Spanish Real, which had a similar design feature. In each quadrant are symbols of different aspects of the missions. The quadrants feature, clockwise starting in the upper left, arches and a bell, a lion rampant, a river, and wheat. These represent community, Spanish heritage, irrigation and natural resources, and farming, respectively. Inscribed on the rim are the name of the coin, "SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS," the state represented, "TEXAS," the date, "2019," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
