2019 saw third release in the popular American Palladium Eagle coin from the United States Mint. The Palladium Eagle is the only palladium coin issued by the United States. This is not only the third release, but also the third different finish in the series. The two previous issues are the 2017 bullion strike and the 2018 proof finished coin. The 2019 entry is the highly coveted reverse proof finish.
The series has been struck at the legendary West Point Mint and features the collectible “W” mint mark. Each coin contains 1 oz. of palladium, has a face value of $25 and was struck on .9995 pure palladium planchets. The series was authorized by the American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin Act of 2010. The series is truly one of the highlights introduced by the U.S. Mint in the last few years.
The images featured on the Palladium Eagle were originally designed by famed American artist, Adolph A. Weinman. The obverse of the series make use of the popular Mercury dime design. The Liberty is depicted wearing a classic Phrygian, or Liberty cap. The hat features the addition of wings that symbolize “freedom of thought” according to the artist. The wings on the cap made it easy for the public to confuse this iconic Liberty image with Mercury, the Roman “Messenger of the Gods.” The reverse design is based on the 1907 American Institute of Architects (AIA) medal reverse. It features the powerful and symbolic American Bald Eagle. The eagle is shown pulling a laurel branch out of the rocky ground.
A very limited mintage of just 30,000 pieces has been announced for this product.
The reverse proof finish is characterized by frosty appearing flat fields and highly polished, mirrored design details. The design is rendered in high relief, with more of the exquisite detail raised from the surface. Coins featuring this special reverse proof appearance have been popular with collectors. High relief issues have also seen significant collector interest.
Palladium is a silvery appearing metal from the platinum metals groups. It is used primarily as a catalytic converter component, in fuel cells and for various medical uses. Palladium is a notoriously difficult metal to work with and only the most adept mints even utilize the "other white" metal.
