Classic Liberty Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse design was revived for the Gold Eagle series after first appearing on the double eagle. The creation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features Liberty standing at the center facing the holder. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom throughout the world, in her right hand and an olive branch, which represents a desire for peace, in her left. The Capitol Dome is included in miniature to the left, while the rays of the morning sun spread out behind Liberty. Forty--six stars on the rim represented each of the states at that time. Four more have been added for the Gold Eagle series to account for the country's newest states.
A male eagle returns to his nest carrying an olive branch on Miley Busiek's reverse. His mate nestles their young while watching his return. Several inscriptions spread throughout the rest of this face, including the coin's face value, "50 DOLLARS," and its weight, "1 OZ. FINE GOLD."
