Why add this Thomas Jefferson 1 oz. Presidential Silver Medal to your collection?
The Presidential Medal series issued by the U.S. Mint is an evolution of the Peace Medal series which originated in the colonial period of the nation's history. The medals were traditionally given to Native American Chiefs in celebration of newly formed alliances. This Thomas Jefferson Medal closely resembles the ones carried by Lewis and Clark on their expedition in 1804-1806. The matte finish medal is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver with a diameter measuring 40.58 mm.
A Presidential Token of Peace
A left facing profile portrait of Jefferson is featured on the obverse, surrounded by the inscription "TH. JEFFERSON PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. A.D. 1801."
Designed by John Reich, the reverse is adorned with a handshake to symbolize the peaceful relationship between the U.S. government and the Native American nations, beneath a crossed tomahawk and peace pipe. Inscribed "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP."
