Why purchase this First Day of Issue 1 oz. Silver Medal struck in honor of the third President of the United States?
The U.S. Mint's Presidential Medals series is inspired by a series of Peace Medals which were given to the leaders of Native American nations as a sign of friendship. Featuring a satiny matte finish, this 40.58 mm diameter medal dedicated to Thomas Jefferson is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver.
Distinctive Presidential Medal Design
The obverse depicts the left facing image of Jefferson, encircled by the inscription "TH. JEFFERSON PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. A.D. 1801."
A symbolic handshake between the Native American nations and the U.S. government is illustrated on the reverse, with a peace pipe and tomahawk crossed above. This design credited to John Reich is common to all releases of the series and includes the inscription "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP."
