The obverse of the medal bears a right-side portrait of President John Quincy Adams. It was designed and sculpted by an early 19th century medallic artist named Moritz Furst. The President, who is shown down to the chest, bears a stern countenance. The date of his inauguration, "1828," is inscribed at the bottom, while his name and title, "JOHN QUINCY ADAMS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES," spread throughout the rest of the rim.
On the reverse is a Peace and Friendship design. Designed and sculpted b John Reich, the image consists of a peace pipe and a tomahawk crossed above clasped hands. There are three different places where a discussion of presidents and U.S. coinage could start: with George Washington and Lady Liberty, with Thomas Jefferson and William McKinley, or with Abraham Lincoln. As we will see, a lot depends on what “circulating” means and what a “commemorative” is, and deciding what actually counts!
