Why purchase this 1 oz Silver 2019 United States James Monroe Medal?
This James Monroe Medal is the latest issue in the US Mint's Presidential Silver Medals Series. Perfect for students of American history, the medal honors the leader who was responsible for a longstanding American policy that helped lead to the independence of many countries in the Americas, the Monroe Doctrine. This fifth issue in the series, which matches Monroe's place in the line of American presidents, was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver on the same type of planchet that is used for America's bullion coin, the Silver Eagle.
Powerful Peace and Friendship Design by John Reich
Moritz Furst designed and engraved the obverse. It features a right-side portrait of President Monroe. Inscribed along the rim are his name, "JAMES MONROE," title, "PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.," and the year in which he took office, "A.D. 1917."
The name of John Reich's reverse design, "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP," is inscribed along with the artistic design elements. The design celebrates peaceful relations between the then-young nation and Native Americans. It consists of a crossed peace pipe and tomahawk above two clasped hands. One of the hands, which has a cuff with three stripes and buttons, represents America, while the other is bare, representing Native Americans.
