Why order this United States 2019 1 oz Silver James Monroe Medal MedalJames Monroe played an important role in establishing America's place in the world with the Monroe Doctrine, a long-term policy of opposing European colonialism in the Americas. Students of history, then, are sure to appreciate this fifth medal in the Presidential Silver Medal Series. The series takes after the presidential bronze medals, which the US Mint has long offered. The US Mint also produced this piece on one of the same 1 oz .999 fine silver planchets used for American Silver Eagles. Powerful James Monroe Design by Moritz FurstThe obverse features a portrait of President James Monroe that was designed and engraved by Moritz Furst. The President is rendered from the chest up in right-side profile. The image is joined by the rim inscription "JAMES MONROE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. A.D. 1817." The date references the year in which he became President. On the reverse is a design known as "Peace and Friendship." That name is inscribed on this face along with a crossed tomahawk and peace pipe and clasped hands. The wrist of the hand representing the United States has a cuff with three stripes and buttons, while the wrist of the one representing Native Americans is bare. Comes in Its Original Government PackagingThe medal comes in a display box from the US Mint. The box itself comes in a themed shipper. In 2016, the First Spouse and Presidential Dollar coin series, which both began in 2007, ended with coins for President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, that changes in 2020.
There are three different places where a discussion of presidents and U.S. coinage could start: with George Washington and Lady Liberty, with Thomas Jefferson and William McKinley, or with Abraham Lincoln. As we will see, a lot depends on what “circulating” means and what a “commemorative” is, and deciding what actually counts!
