Why add this Moon Mission Releases 2019-S US Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Clad Half Dollar Proof?
The Apollo 11 mission's successful moon landing is one of the greatest accomplishments in human history. It was also an important Cold War Space Race win for the United States. The U.S Mint issued coins to mark the 50th anniversary of the mission in 2019. This piece is one of a select few to earn the Moon Mission Releases designation from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That designation, which, along with the grade, is printed on a specialized label, indicates that the coin was submitted to NGC's Florida headquarters during the specific anniversary period, July 16-24, 2019. Struck from cupro-nickel, this coin bears the San Francisco Mint's "S" mint mark.
Exquisite Neil Armstrong Design by Phebe Hemphill
On the obverse of this coin is the artwork of Gary Cooper that emerged successful in a competition held for the spot. Sculpted by Joe Menna, it features one footprint on the surface of the moon. Although simple in concept, the design is powerful because of what that footprint represents. The Apollo 11 mission was a team effort, and Cooper paid tribute to the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs that made it possible by including their names on the rim at the top. "2019," "LIBERTY," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are also included on this face.
Phebe Hemphill modeled her reverse design after a famous photograph. From left to right, an American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module stand on the face of the moon. What is unique about this is that the image is shown in the reflection of the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. This convex face of the coin replicates the curvature of that visor. Inscriptions on the reverse include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "HALF DOLLAR," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
Perfect PF70 with Black Core Holder
This coin comes set in a black core holder. It received NGC's highest grade, Proof 70, which is reserved exclusively for coins that lack any imperfections that are visible under 5x magnification.
