Why buy this 2019-S Commemorative Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Clad Half Dollar Proof?
In July of 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man ever to set foot on the moon. He was joined by Buzz Aldrin. The event was at once a major American victory in the Space Race against the Soviet Union and a major accomplishment in the field of space exploration. Now, the U.S Mint is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the event with seven domed coins, collectively just the second ever domed issues from the mint. This Proof Clad Half Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint and bears an "S" mint mark. It is part of a total mintage of 750,000 pieces, which also includes the uncirculated half dollars.
Poignant Lunar Visit Designs by Gary Cooper and Phebe Hemphill
The mint held a contest to find the obverse design, and Gary Cooper's artwork won out. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, the design depicts a footprint on the surface of the moon, as well as images of the moon in four stages and the names of the NASA programs that made the landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Other inscriptions on this face include "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2019."
The convex reverse features Phebe Hemphill's recreation of a portion of a photograph taken on the moon. The image itself is the helmet of Buzz Aldrin's spacesuit, the curvature of which is reproduced in the coin's domed shape. The reflection on the visor features Neil Armstrong alongside the lunar module with the American flag off to the left. "HALF DOLLAR" is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are included elsewhere.
