Why purchase this 2019-S Clad Half Dollar 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 Commemorative?Share in the U.S Mint's celebration of one of America's greatest accomplishments with this Apollo 11 Clad Half Dollar Commemorative. The coin marks the 50th anniversary of man's first visit to the moon, a coup in space exploration, and a major American victory in the Cold War's Space race. This coin is one of seven issued to mark the occasion. The set of seven coins mark just the second ever domed release in the history of the US Mint. Along with its proof counterpart, it is part of a mintage of three quarters of a million coins. Poignant Footprint Design by Gary CooperGary Cooper won a design competition for the obverse, the concave face of the coin. It features a single footprint in the lunar surface, a simple yet powerful symbol of the achievement. Along the rim at the top, the names of the three programs that led up to the moon walk, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," are interspersed among images of the moon in different phases. "2019" and "LIBERTY" are among the other inscriptions on this face. Phebe Hemphill's reverse design is convex to mimic the shape of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which dominates this face. Taken from a famous picture from the lunar landing, Aldrin's visor reflects, from left to right, the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module. Inscriptions on this face read, "HALF DOLLAR," country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
