Why order this Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative 2019-S Clad Half Dollar Proof? The U.S Mint is releasing seven coins to celebrate the 50th anniversary of man's first visit to the moon. The lunar visit remains the single most important event in space exploration, and it also served as a major American triumph over the USSR in the Space Race. The coins are just the second ever domed issues from the mint. This piece is part of a joint mintage of 750,000 pieces, which also includes the uncirculated version. This piece bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint, where it was struck from cupronickel. Powerful Reflection Design by Phebe HemphillOn the obverse is a design that Gary Cooper submitted for the US Mint's contest for the position. It consists of a single footprint on the moon's surface, as well as the names of the three NASA programs that led up to the Apollo 11 mission, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Interspersed among those names are depictions of the moon in four different phases. The reverse was both designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. She modeled it off of part of a picture taken during the famous visit. The design itself features Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. The visor is the largest part of the helmet and shows a reflection of Neil Armstrong standing between the lunar module and the American flag. The coin's face value, "HALF DOLLAR," is in the upper left of the visor, while two other inscriptions are included on other parts of the helmet. Virtually Flawless PF69 ERThis coin earned Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) second highest grade, Proof 69, which indicates that it is perfect as seen by the naked eye. It also received Early Releases status, which is given coin coins that were submitted for grading within 30 days of their initial mint release.
