Why buy this 2019-S 50th Anniversary Commemorative Apollo 11 Clad Half Dollar Proof?
Share in the U.S Mint's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with this Apollo 11 Clad Proof. The marquee event in space exploration makes this attractive for anyone with an interest in space exploration, while the political implications of the Space Race victory for the United States in the Space Race make it an attractive choice for patriotic Americans. This coin is one of seven domed pieces issued to mark the occasion, and together the coins are just the second ever domed issues of the US Mint. This piece bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint and is part of a joint mintage with the uncirculated version of 750,000 pieces.
Patriotic Helmet Reflection Design by Phebe Hemphill
A submission by Gary Cooper emerged victorious in a contest held by the US Mint for the obverse. At the center is a footprint on the surface of the moon, a powerful symbol of the achievement. "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," the names of the NASA programs that led up to the mission, arch over the footprint along with four images of the moon in different phases. Additional inscriptions spread throughout the bottom half of this face.
The convex reverse, which was both designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, recreates the curvature of the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. That visor dominates the reverse and reflects an image of the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module. The coin's face value, "HALF DOLLAR," is included in the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are on other parts of the helmet.
Stunning PF69 ER with Black Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this piece in a sleek black core holder. They also certified the coin Proof 69 and Early Releases. Proof 69 coins appear perfect to the unaided eye, while Early Releases were submitted for grading within 30 days of their initial mint release.
