The second state themed release of the U.S. Mint's American Innovation series is a tribute to the life-changing discovery of the polio vaccine in 1953 by Dr. Jonas Salk and his team at the University of Pittsburgh, in the state of Pennsylvania. This 26.49 mm diameter clad 2019 dated coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint with an exquisite reverse proof finish. No more than 75,000 will be issued.
Design Symbolizing Vaccine Development
The reverse design by Richard Masters and Chief Engraver Joseph Menna features the outline of a period microscope, beside an artistic interpretation of three stages of magnification of the poliovirus molecule. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "POLIO VACCINE," "1953" and "PENNSYLVANIA."
The Statue of Liberty is depicted on the obverse, designed by Justin Kunz and Phebe Hemphill. Inscriptions include "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "$1." A stylized gear privy mark appears beneath the motto to identify the coin's inclusion in the American Innovation series. "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "2019" the "S" Mint mark and thirteen stars are inscribed on the coin's smooth edge.
