Why buy this 2019-P $100 Australia 1 oz Gold Nugget Welcome Stranger?
The Perth Mint marks the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the largest known alluvial gold nugget ever to be found with this stunning coin. Named for the nugget itself, the coin is called "Welcome Stranger." John Deason & Richard Oates made the find in Victoria, Australia on February 5, 1869. The nugget had to be broken into pieces to fit on bank scales and ended up totaling 66 kg. This coin celebrating the discovery was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine gold and bears the iconic "P" mint mark on the reverse. It comes from a mintage of just 7,500 pieces.
Historic Welcome Stranger Design
Queen Elizabeth II is rendered in right-side profile by Jody Clark on the obverse. Clark, a designer at the British Royal Mint, shows her wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem, as well as earrings and a necklace. The rim frame around the picture bears three inscriptions, including her name, "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and "100 DOLLARS."
Welcome Stranger features at the center of the reverse. It is identified along with the year of its discovery by the inscription "WELCOME STRANGER 1869" that is just inside the rim frame. Inscriptions on that frame read, "AUSTRALIAN NUGGET," "2019," and "1 OZ 9999 GOLD."
