Why purchase this 2018-P $2 Australia 2 oz Silver Dove Piedfort?
The First World was among the bloodiest conflicts in human history. Trench warfare, barbed wire, and relatively advanced weaponry made it horrific even by the standards of war. In 1918, the war came to an end with an armistice signed by Germany, France, and Britain. In 2018, the Perth Mint marked the centennial anniversary of that armistice with this 2018-P Silver Dove Piedfort. Struck from 2 oz of .9999 fine silver, this is the first ever dove bullion coin issued by the Perth Mint. Just 10,000 of these coins were struck. This piece remains in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Magnificent Dove Design
Experienced collectors are sure to be familiar with the obverse design, Ian Rank-Broadley's right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Broadley shows the monarch wearing a tiara in the image, which featured on Australian coinage for two decades. Rim inscriptions on this face include her name, "ELIZABETH II," as well as the coin's date, weight, purity, and face value.
A dove carries a poppy in its beak as it soars on the reverse. The traditional symbol of peace appears against a backdrop of inscriptions of the word "PEACE" in various fonts, sizes, and directions. Rim inscriptions offer the date of the peace, "1918," and the event commemorated by the coin, "END OF WORLD WAR I."
