Why purchase this 1 oz Silver 2019-P $1 Australia Welcome Stranger Nugget?
On Feb. 5, 1869, John Deason and Richard Oates made history when they discovered the largest known alluvial gold nugget in history. They made their discovery in Victoria, Australia. The nugget, which became known as "Welcome Stranger," was so large that it had to be broken by an anvil to fit on bank scales. All told, it weighed in at a massive 66 kg. Now, the Perth Mint is marking the 150th anniversary of the discovery with this coin. This piece was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine silver and is part of a mintage of just 30,000 pieces. It bears a "P" mint mark on the reverse. The coin is a 'must have' for any collectors interested in the exploration and discovery part of the precious metals world.
Stunning Welcome Stranger Design
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by British Royal Mint designer Jody Clark. The monarch is shown wearing earrings, a necklace, and her Royal Diamond Diadem. Her name, "ELIZABETH II," joins "AUSTRALIA" and "1 DOLLAR" on the rim.
The reverse features an image of Welcome Stranger. Radial lines serve as the background, making the coin difficult to counterfeit. Below the nugget is the inscription "WELCOME STRANGER 1869." The rim frame includes three sets of inscriptions, "AUSTRALIAN NUGGET," "2019," AND "1 OZ 9999 SILVER."
