Why buy this 1 oz Silver 2019-P $1 Australia Welcome Stranger Nugget?
John Deason & Richard Oates made a historic discovery on February 5, 1869. They unearthed the largest known alluvial gold nugget in history, which is today known as "Welcome Stranger." The nugget weighed in at 66 kg and was so large that it had to be broken with an anvil to fit on bank scales. Deason and Oates found the nugget in Victoria, Australia, and now the Perth Mint is marking the 150th anniversary of the event with this issue. Part of a mintage of just 30,000 pieces, this coin was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine silver at the Perth Mint and bears that mint's treasured "P" mint mark on the reverse.
Stunning Welcome Stranger Design
Like other 2019 issues from the Perth Mint, this coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. Clark shows the monarch facing right with her shoulders open to the holder. She wears her Royal Diamond Diadem, as well as earrings and a necklace. Her name, "ELIZABETH II," is inscribed along the rim, as are "AUSTRALIA" and "1 DOLLAR."
On the reverse, radial lines serve as a backdrop for Welcome Stranger, the famous nugget. Below the nugget is the inscription "WELCOME STRANGER 1869." A rim frame bears additional inscriptions, which include "AUSTRALIAN NUGGET," "2019," and "1 OZ 9999 SILVER."
Virtually Flawless MS69 FR with Opera House Label
According to the grade that this coin received from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), Mint State 69, this coin appears flawless to the unaided eye.
