Why order this Apollo 11 2019-P 50th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar?

In 1969, the United States succeeded landing a man on the moon for the first time, accomplishing something long thought the stuff of fantasy for almost all of human history. The achievement was both a major milestone in space exploration and a pivotal victory in the Space Race of the Cold War. Now, NASA marks the 50th anniversary of the occasion with seven coins, including this Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof. Struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver, this coin is part of a maximum mintage of 400,000 pieces. The 400,000 figure also includes the uncirculated version of this coin. The Apollo 11 50th Anniversary coins are just the second ever domed issues from the US Mint.

Poignant Footprint Design by Gary Cooper

Gary Cooper's artwork emerged victorious in a contest that was held for the obverse design. It consists of a single footprint on the surface of the moon. Reflecting on it, the holder can almost hear the words of Neil Armstrong as he stepped out of the lunar module: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Cooper pays homage to the programs that led up to the landing with inscriptions of their names, "MERCURY," "VENUS," and "APOLLO," above interspersed with depictions of the moon in various phases.

The reverse design was created and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. It originally came from part of a photograph that was taken during the moon landing. It features a reflection in the visor of the helmet of Buzz Aldrin's space suit. The reflection shows Neil Armstrong standing on the moon between the American flag and the lunar module. The convex shape of this face replicates the curvature of Aldrin's helmet. The coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," is inscribed within the visor.
