In honor of the 50th Anniversary of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar landing, the U.S. Mint has issued an exciting commemorative series in 2019 featuring dome-shaped coins. This 26.73 mm diameter dollar denomination proof coin from the series was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 0.8594 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver, representing the Mint's first .999 pure commemorative coin release.
Impressive Lunar Themed Designs
The concave obverse illustrates an astronaut's boot print on the lunar surface. Above, symbols representing the phases of the moon are separated by the inscriptions "MERCURY," "GEMINI" and "APOLLO." Created by artists Gary Cooper and Joseph Menna, the design includes the additional inscriptions "2019," "P," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY."
The domed reverse designed by Phebe Hemphill features the images of Neil Armstrong, the U.S. flag and the lunar lander reflected in the helmet of astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
