Why purchase this 2019-P Proof Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar?
Participate in the U.S Mint's celebration of the 50th anniversary of one of America's greatest accomplishments with this Apollo 11 Proof Silver Dollar. The 1969 Apollo 11 mission landed man on the moon for the first time. In doing so, it set a new standard for what man believed possible. The mission also proved a major American victory over the Soviet Union in the Space Race. This coin is among seven domed coins issued to mark the occasion. Along with the uncirculated version of the coin, it is part of a joint mintage of no more than 400,000 pieces. This piece bears the P" mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint, where it was struck on a 26.73 g planchet of .999 fine silver.
Mesmerizing Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
At first glance, Gary Cooper's obverse design of a footprint on the surface of the moon seems simple. As one reflects on it, though, the magnitude of the accomplishment it represents, sets in. Countless people contributed to the effort, among them the NASA employees who worked on the three programs that led up to the mission. Cooper honors their work by including the names of those three programs, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the rim at the top with images of different phases of the moon. Additional inscriptions are included in the lower half of this face.
The reverse was both designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill and is sure to stoke the fires of patriotism in every American's heart. Taken from a famous photograph, the image shows Neil Armstrong and the lunar module along with the American flag as reflected on the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. The curvature of the coin beautifully represents the curvature of Aldrin's helmet. The coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," is also included in the visor.
Marvelous PF69 FR with Black Core Holder
